Bill Clinton Pardons

Today, July 2, 2007, President George W. Bush commuted the jail sentence of White House aid I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby.  He did not pardon Libby, only commuted his sentence.  Mr. Libby still has the conviction on his record and he is still responsible for the $250,000 court imposed fine.

Listed below are quotes by some of the "outraged" democrats.  Think back about some of the 456 PARDONS granted by Bill Clinton and try to recall how "outraged" the democrats were then.  Remember when Denise Rich gave Bill and Hillary Clinton $400,000 and nine days later Clinton PARDONED her husband Marc Rich?

Where was the democrat "outrage" then?

Mrs. Clinton should have the good graces and wisdom to keep her mouth shut about any pardons or similar actions performed by President Bush.  Her husband sold pardons for cash and even pardoned his cocaine peddling brother.

Listed below are the pardons granted by President Clinton.  Take a few moments to look them over.  Some pardons were deserved and others were not.  You decide.  Take a close look at the nature of their crimes and then try to fairly compare those crimes to the crimes committed by Mr. Libby.

Please read a Wall Street Journal editorial on Bush and Libby.

Examples of democrat outrage!

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev
. - "The Constitution gives President Bush the power to commute sentences, but history will judge him harshly for using that power to benefit his own vice president's chief of staff who was convicted of such a serious violation of law."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. - "The president said he would hold accountable anyone involved in the Valerie Plame leak case. By his action today, the president shows his word is not to be believed."

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y.  - "This commutation sends the clear signal that in this administration, cronyism and ideology trump competence and justice." .

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.  -  "This is exactly the kind of politics we must change so we can begin restoring the American people's faith in a government that puts the country's progress ahead of the bitter partisanship of recent years."

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.  - "President Bush's 11th-hour commutation of Scooter Libby's sentence makes a mockery of the justice system and betrays the idea that all Americans are expected to be held accountable for their actions, even close friends of Vice President Cheney."

John Edwards, D-N.C - "Only a president clinically incapable of understanding that mistakes have consequences could take the action he did today. President Bush has just sent exactly the wrong signal to the country and the world."

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. -  "Accountability has been in short supply in the Bush administration, and this commutation fits that pattern."

Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del. - "It is time for the American people to be heard - I call for all Americans to flood the White House with phone calls tomorrow expressing their outrage over this blatant disregard for the rule of law."

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill - ."When it comes to the law, there should not be two sets of rules - one for President Bush and Vice President Cheney and another for the rest of America. Even Paris Hilton had to go to jail. No one in this administration should be above the law."
